What’s So Great About Hiking: Hiking Benefits

Hiking. It is an activity that thousands of people enjoy. There are thousands and thousands of different trails all over where people can go hiking. Some trails are more challenging than others. Some trails are perfect for the family outing with kids. Hiking is a way of becoming one with nature, to enjoy what nature offers: fresh air, beautiful trees and scenery.

Hikers should always bring plenty of water and some food for a picnic. Also, before going on a hike, always tell someone where you are going and when you-ll be back. Accidents do happen and it is better if someone knows where you are and knows if you-re overdue to be back so they can call for help. There-s something else that also shares nature with hikers: wildlife. It is important to be aware of your surroundings and know what wildlife is present in the area so you can be prepared. For example, if you are hiking in bear country, you should know what to do in case a bear should ever attack (which is very rare, usually it is when the bear has cubs with her and is taken by surprise when you approach). If a bear charges, never run. Drop down to the ground, cover your head with hands and play dead. For cougars, never bend down or turn your back to the cougar. Make loud noises and flap your shirt, making yourself appear big.

The Hoh Rainforest in the peninsula of Western Washington has amazing trails that lead to different areas. Some trails lead to a beautiful waterfall, others lead to a river where people can have a picnic by the riverbed.

One thing to remember when hiking: The trail isn-t yours. It is a treasure for many others and in order to preserve it for future generations, pick up after yourself and don-t damage the fragile vegetation. Help preserve its beauty so thousands of others like yourself can enjoy it too.
